The Universe is Expanding from a Single Point

In a recent blog, I showed that the ancient Hebrews understood that space and time were part of a single continuum, with time being a fourth dimension. Not only did the ancient Hebrews know that space and time were both part of a single continuum, but they were also aware that the universe is expanding and began as a single point or "singularity".

In 1925 the American astronomer Edwin Hubble made the discovery that the universe is expanding. He proved that there is a direct relationship between the speeds of distant galaxies and their distances from Earth. This is now known as Hubble's Law.

In 1931 Georges Lemaître, a Belgian physicist and Roman Catholic priest suggested that this evident expansion of the universe, if projected back in time, indicated that in the past the universe itself was smaller, until at some finite time in the past all the mass of the universe was concentrated into a single point, a singularity.

Amazingly the Zohar, centuries earlier, described the creation of the universe as beginning from a single "primordial point" from which it "expanded":

Radiance! [zohar] Concealed of concealed struck its aura, which touched and did not touch this point.  Then this beginning expanded, building itself a palace worthy of glorious praise.  There it sowed seed to give birth, availing worlds.
(Zohar 1:15a)

God said, “Let there be light!” And there was light (Gen. 1:3).  Here begins the discovery of hidden treasures: how the world was created in detail… This light is concealed mystery, an expansion expanding, bursting from the mysterious secret of the hidden supernal aura.  First it burst, generating from its mystery a single concealed point, for Ein Sof burst out of its aura, revealing this point (yod).  Once this yod expanded, what remained was found to be light (OR), from the mystery that concealed aura (AVIR).  After the primordial point, yod, emerged from it into being, it manifested upon it, touching yet not touching.  Expanding, it emerged: this is light (OR), light remaining from aura (AVIR),

Hi James, 

I had a brief look at the clip.

I don't think it applies, because Yehovah is outside any frame of reference and it is He who makes the statements (and surely not from our earthly perspective). 

If He says the earth has pillars (1 SAM 2:8), then I can either reply, "No, it hasn't" - because NASA photos show otherwise, or because it's meant symbolically, or because it refers to the atmospheric layers, or because it's unscientific, or because every educated person says so, etc., etc., - or I can agree with what Yehovah says. 

Another example: 

The heavens declare the glory of Elohim, and the firmament shows His handiwork; Day unto day utters speech... their words are gone out to the end of the world. In them has He set a tent for the sun, which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoices as a strong man to run his course. His going forth is from the end of heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it (PSA 19:2-7, shortened).

Yehovah says through David that there is a firmament/tent, that the visible heavens have an end, that the sun follows a circuit, etc.

Again, we can choose to explain it away as poetry or similar and agree with man, or we can agree with Yehovah.

I think it's futile trying to harmonise Tanakh verses with NASA stories. The heavens which NASA presents us, don't declare the glory of God, but deny the glory of God. Is His power anywhere needed in modern astronomy? No, of course not. Proud, God-hating man has managed to explain everything "scientifically". Even "Life" itself simply evolved from dead chemicals; the miracle of creation is not needed anymore (needed are long periods of time, and an education system to condition the people). 

This is my current understanding at least.

In Genesis 15:6 we read concerning Avraham:

“And he believed in YHWH, and He counted it to him for righteousness.”
(Gen. 15:6)

The official Targum to this verse paraphrases:

 “And he believed in the Word (Memra) of YHWH. And He counted it to him for righteousness.”
(Gen. 15:6 Targum Onkelos)

And Targum Psedo-Jonathan has:

“And he believed in YHWH, and had faith in the Word (Memra) of YHWH, and He reckoned it to him for righteousness.”
(Gen. 15:6 Targum Pseudo-Jonathan)

Of course we know that the Torah is the Word of YHWH (Is. 1:10; 2:3) and of course we know that Messiah is the incarnation of the Word (Jn. 1:1-3, 14; Rev. 19:13), a point which the first century Alexandrian Jew Philo of Alexandria also makes when he writes:

“The head of all things is the eternal Word (Logos) of the eternal God, under which, as if it were his feet or other limbs, is placed the whole world, over which He passes and firmly stands. Now it is not because Messiah is Lord that He passes and sits over the whole world, for His seat with His Father and God but because for its perfect fullness the world is in need of the care and superintendence of the best ordered dispensation, and for its own complete piety, of the Divine Word (Logos), just as living creatures (need) a head, without which it is impossible to live.”
(Q&A on Exodus, II, 117)

Philo of Alexandria made a very interesting comment about this verse (Gen. 15:6):

“It is best, therefore, to trust in God, and not in uncertain reasoning, or unsure conjectures. "Abraham trusted in the Lord, and it was counted to him for Righteousness” (Gen. 15:6) And Moses governed the people, being testified to that he was faithful with his whole house. But if we distrust our own reason (LOGOS, Word), we shall prepare and build ourselves a city of the mind which will destroy the truth.”
(Philo of Alexandria; Allegorical Interpretation, III, 228)

Although Philo’s native language was Greek and the Septuagint was his Bible, he was clearly aware, directly or indirectly, of the reading of the Targums to this verse, or at least a general tradition that in this verse Avraham’s faith is in the “Word” (Aramaic: Memra; Greek Logos).  

Philo is telling us that the “Word” is also “reason” or “logic” (our English word “Logic” is actually derived from the Greek word LOGOS).

The Torah and the Messiah are one. When we study Torah, the Wisdom of Torah gestates in our Understanding and gives birth to Knowledge of Torah. This is what is meant by having the Torah in our inward parts. Since the Torah and the Messiah are one, this is also having the Messiah within us. The Messiah within us is a spark of YHWH within us, a second soul. While our animal soul has an inclination to do evil, this second soul has an inclination to do good. This helps us to overcome our evil inclination. This occurs as Wisdom, Understanding and Knowledge of Torah within us flows from our mind down to our emotions, resulting in a love for Elohim that inclines us to keep the positive commandments, and an awe for Elohim that inclines us not to violate the negative commandments.  In this way our mind is elevated above our emotions.

Our faith in Torah is rooted in Logic, and one important aspect of the Word is rational thought, logic.  Philo is telling is that Avrham’s faith was also rooted in logic, it was faith in the Word… faith in rational thought.  

Philo warns us that if we cast rational thought aside, we will find ourselves not having faith in YHWH but instead creating subjective constructs of our own imagination.  

Remember, Avrham’s faith was a rational, logical faith.  Avraham’s faith was faith in the Word.

Rational faith is the answer to secularization. Faith need not be irrational. Faith can be built upon a rational foundation of logic.

The first Century Jewish writer Philo on the six days of creation:

III. (13) And he says that the world was made in six days, not because the Creator stood in need of a length of time (for it is natural that God should do everything at once, not merely by uttering a command, but by even thinking of it); but because the things created required arrangement; and number is akin to arrangement; and, of all numbers, six is, by the laws of nature, the most productive: for of all the numbers, from the unit upwards, it is the first perfect one, being made equal to its parts, and being made complete by them; the number three being half of it, and the number two a third of it, and the unit a sixth of it, and, so to say, it is formed so as to be both male and female, and is made up of the power of both natures; for in existing things the odd number is the male, and the even number is the female; accordingly, of odd numbers the first is the number three, and of even numbers the first is two, and the two numbers multiplied together make six. (14) It was fitting therefore, that the world, being the most perfect of created things, should be made according to the perfect number, namely, six: and, as it was to have in it the causes of both, which arise from combination, that it should be formed according to a mixed number, the first combination of odd and even numbers, since it was to embrace the character both of the male who sows the seed, and of the female who receives it. (15) And he allotted each of the six days to one of the portions of the whole, taking out the first day, which he does not even call the first day, that it may not be numbered with the others, but entitling it one, he names it rightly, perceiving in it, and ascribing to it the nature and appellation of the limit.

Paul writes to the Romans:

13 For the hearers of the Torah are not righteous before Eloah, but the doers of the Torah are justified.
14 For if the Goyim (whom the Torah is not to), from their nature do [acts] of the Torah, (while the Torah is not to them), to their nefeshot [there] is a Torah.
15 And they show the work of the Torah, as it is written upon their heart, and their conscience bears witness concerning them, as their own reasoning [will] rebuke or defend one another,
16 In the day that Eloah judges the secret things of the sons of men, according to my Good News, by the hand of Yeshua the Messiah
(Rom. 2:13-16 HRV) 

Now especially within Torah Observant circles we have wrestled with what Paul is really saying here.  Recently while studying the writings of the first Century Jew Philo of Alexandria, I discovered the answer to what Paul is actually expressing here.

Philo of Alexandria taught the concept of Natural Law.  Philo taught that the universe is an effect that must have a cause, i.e. a Creator, and that this Creator has a preference for order as opposed to chaos, as expressed by the order of the universe itself.  Philo taught that implicit to the order of the universe.

(1) Of other lawgivers, some have set forth what they considered to be just and reasonable, in a naked and unadorned manner, while others, investing their ideas with an abundance of amplification, have sought to bewilder the people, by burying the truth under a heap of fabulous inventions. (2) But Moses, rejecting both of these methods, the one as inconsiderate, careless, and unphilosophical, and the other as mendacious and full of trickery, made the beginning of his laws entirely beautiful, and in all respects admirable, neither at once declaring what ought to be done or the contrary, nor (since it was necessary to mould beforehand the dispositions of those who were to use his laws) inventing fables himself or adopting those which had been invented by others. (3) And his exordium, as I have already said, is most admirable; embracing the creation of the world, under the idea that the law corresponds to the world and the world to the law, and that a man who is obedient to the law, being, by so doing, a citizen of the world, arranges his actions with reference to the intention of nature, in harmony with which the whole universal world is regulated. (4) Accordingly no one, whether poet or historian, could ever give expression in an adequate manner to the beauty of his ideas respecting the creation of the world; for they surpass all the power of language, and amaze our hearing, being too great and venerable to be adapted to the sense of any created being.
(On Creation 1-4)

And:

…for he [Moses] was not like any ordinary compiler of history, studying to leave behind him records of ancient transactions as memorials to future ages for the mere sake of affording pleasure without any advantage; but he traced back the most ancient events from the beginning of the world, commencing with the creation of the universe, in order to make known two most necessary principles. First, that the same being was the father and creator of the world, and likewise the lawgiver of truth; secondly, that the man who adhered to these laws, and clung closely to a connection with and obedience to nature, would live in a manner corresponding to the arrangement of the universe with a perfect harmony and union, between his words and his actions and between his actions and his words.
(On the Life of Moses 2, 48)

To Philo, the Torah of Moses is identical with the Natural Law which is revealed in the very order of the universe which is the Creator’s work.  Paul speaks of this very principle earlier in Romans when he writes:

17 For the righteousness of Eloah is revealed in it, from Trust to Trust; as it is written, The righteous will live by trust. (Hab. 2:4)
18 For the wrath of Eloah is revealed from heaven, upon all the iniquity and the wickedness of men--those who hold the truth in iniquity,
19 Because the knowledge of Eloah is revealed among them, for Eloah revealed it among them.
20 For the hidden things of Eloah, from the foundations of the world, by His creations; by [His] wisdom, were made evident and power, and Godhead, which is eternal: that they might be without excuse. (See Wisdom 13:1, 5, 8)
21 Because they knew Eloah, and they did not glorify Him as Eloah, and give thanks to Him: but were made vain in their reasoning, and their heart was darkened, without understanding.
22 And while they were thinking in their nefeshot that they were wise, they were fools.
23 And they changed the glory of the incorruptible Eloah, into the likeness of the image of a son of man: who is corruptible, and into the likeness of birds, and of four-footed [animals], and of creeping things of the earth. (See Wisdom 11:15; 12:24-27; 13:10; 14:8)
24 Because of this, Eloah released them, to the defiled lust of their heart: that they might dishonor their bodies by them.(see Wisdom 14:12, 24-27)
25 And they changed the Truth of Eloah into a lie! And they reverenced and served the created, more than their Creator, (See Wisdom 14:29) to whom be our praises, and our blessings forever and ever. Amen
26 Because of this, Eloah released them to the passions of shame: for their women changed the use of their sex, and did that which was not natural.
27 And also their men, thus forsook the use of women, and ran riotously in lust for one another. And man with man, they behaved in disgrace, and the reward that was just, to their error, in themselves, [they] received.
28 And since they had not determined in their nefeshot to know Eloah, Eloah released them to a mind of vanity, that they might do that which is not proper;
29 Being filled with all iniquity, and sexual immorality, and bitterness, and evil, and greed, and envy, and slaughter, and treachery, and deceit, and evil reasoning,
30 And murmuring, and slander. And [they are] haters of Eloah: insolent, prideful, boasters, inventors of evil, mindless, who are not obedient to their parents,
31 And who have no stability, and no love, nor tranquility, and no tenderness.
32 [They are] those who, although they know the judgment of Eloah (that those who act like these, He condemns to death), not only do these, but also fellowship with those who do them.
(Rom. 1:17-32 HRV)

Paul is therefore saying that the Creation itself reveals the Natural Law of the Creator, which is itself the Torah.  Paul is saying that when the Goyim follow this Natural Law which is evident in the Creation, they are showing the Torah (at least to some degree) written in their hearts, and that such persons may perform acts of the Torah without having heard the Torah.

Therefore observations of the Creation tell us about I the Creator.

The Scriptures are not telling us to ignore empirical evidence from observation of the universe, the Scriptures are telling us to embrace that information.  If observation of the universe reveals that the universe is expanding , we are not told to ignore the facts in favor of our personal interpretation of Genesis.

Just a few bullet points in reply:

1. Here’s an article by Thomas Smid (M. Sc. Physics, Ph. D. Astronomy) showing that the universe is not expanding, thus confirming GEN 2:1 - https://www.physicsmyths.org.uk/expansion.htm

2. Copernicus, Kepler, Newton, Galilei et al. where steeped in the occult, in Hermeticism, and magic – unlikely that Eloah revealed to them the order of the universe. They served the Jesuit cause of discrediting the Bible by revamping ancient Egyptian sun-worship.

3. Yehovah could have easily described the earth as a spinning ball orbiting the sun, but the Torah’s statements are in direct conflict with “the wisdom of this world”.

4. A logic which denies all supernatural is “earthly, from the reasonings of the nefesh, and from shadim (Jam 3:17).” E.g., that the Nazarenes healed the sick, cast out demons, and raised the dead, may defy logic, but it glorifies Yehovah. That man cannot explain it, doesn’t deny its reality.

5. That man cannot grasp the “cornerstone of the earth”, the pillars, the firmament, the windows of heaven, etc., doesn’t deny their reality either. Besides, fallen man won’t reveal the real world despite all evidence (for the same reason they don’t reveal the find of Noah’s Ark).

6. The Tanakh states that Yehovah puts the Torah into our inward parts, not we ourselves (JER 31:33). When the second Adam, the quickening Spirit, is put into us by Eloah, our hearts/spirits are circumcised and revived (because they had been dead since the first Adam). This cutting of the B’rit Chadashah occurred in ACTS 2, and is what Yeshua died for – the Rock was struck and living water gushed forth.

7. If Torah study and good works were able to save us, then Yeshua died and rose in vain. Our evil inclinations are put to death by the Spirit (ROM 8:13), not by our own efforts. Yehovah has therefore put His Spirit into our hearts, and no one who is not born of God, no one who is born of the flesh will see the Kingdom of Eloah (JN 3:3-6).

8. The adversary deceives the whole world, and the aforementioned magicians have made it bow down to heliocentrism. People may call me dumb or having fallen prey to an optical illusion, still I don’t intend to bow down.
