The Three Headed Eagle in 2Ezra (KJV: 2Esdras) Revealed
By James Trimm
The book of 2nd Esdras book appears in the Latin Vulgate as well as the Peshitta, but does not appear in the Greek LXX. This book has been given various names. In the Latin Vulgate our canonical book of Ezra is 1Esdras; Nehemiah is 2Esdras; 1Ezra (KJV: 1Esdras) is 3 Esdars and this Apocalypse of Ezra is titled "3Esdras" In the KJV it is titled "2Esdras".
The Apocalypse of Ezra is an apocalyptic work consisting of seven visions given to Salatiel also called Ezra:
1. (3:1-5:20) Why is Israel allowed to suffer under Babylon?
2. (5:21-6:34) The lot of those who die in this age.
3. (6:35-9:25) The final judgment.
4. (9:26-10:59) Woman transformed into Zion.
5. (11:1-12:51) Three Headed Eagle rising from the sea.
6. (13:1-13:58) Man rising from the sea.
7. (14:1-14:48) Dictation of books.
This was the original material of the Apocalypse of Ezra. However, the monks monkied with the text. Latin scribes added a two chapter introduction (Chapters 1-2) and a two chapter epilogue (Chapters 15-16). These sections, added by the monks strongly profess replacement theology. In them Elohim rejects Israel (1:24-32) and replaces Israel with "a people that will come" (1:33-40). Elohim then declares "I will give them the kingdom of Jerusalem, which I was going to give to Israel" (2:10).
The book has come to us in two versions. The long version, which includes the added chapters, and a more primitive short version which lacks the additions.
The Latin version contains the additional chapters.
The Syriac (Aramaic Peshitta), Coptic, Ethiopic, Arabic, Armenian and Georgian versions do not contain the additions.
The original Hebrew of this book has not survived, however the Peshitta does preserve the text in Aramaic and we have used this Aramaic text for the Hebraic-Roots Version of The Apocalypse of Ezra.
Now for The Fifth Vision: The Three Headed Eagle
The vision is given in Chapter 11 as follows:
1: Then saw I a dream, and, behold, there came up from the sea an eagle, which had twelve feathered wings, and three heads.
2: And I saw, and, behold, she spread her wings over all the earth, and all the winds of the air blew on her, and were gathered together.
3: And I beheld, and out of her feathers there grew other contrary feathers; and they became little feathers and small.
4: But her heads were at rest: the head in the midst was greater than the other, yet rested it with the residue.
5: Moreover I beheld, and, lo, the eagle flew with her feathers, and reigned upon earth, and over them that dwelt therein.
6: And I saw that all things under heaven were subject unto her, and no man spoke against her, no, not one creature upon earth.
7: And I beheld, and, lo, the eagle rose upon her talons, and spoke to her feathers, saying,
8: Watch not all at once: sleep every one in his own place, and watch by course:
9: But let the heads be preserved for the last.
10: And I beheld, and, lo, the voice went not out of her heads, but from the midst of her body.
11: And I numbered her contrary feathers, and, behold, there were eight of them.
12: And I looked, and, behold, on the right side there arose one feather, and reigned over all the earth;
13: And so it was, that when it reigned, the end of it came, and the place thereof appeared no more: so the next following stood up. and reigned, and had a great time;
14: And it happened, that when it reigned, the end of it came also, like as the first, so that it appeared no more.
15: Then came there a voice unto it, and said,
16: Hear you that have borne rule over the earth so long: this I say unto you, before you begin to appear no more,
17: There shall none after you attain unto your time, neither unto the half thereof.
18: Then arose the third, and reigned as the other before, and appeared no more also.
19: So went it with all the residue one after another, as that every one reigned, and then appeared no more.
20: Then I beheld, and, lo, in process of time the feathers that followed stood up upon the right side, that they might rule also; and some of them ruled, but within a while they appeared no more:
21: For some of them were set up, but ruled not.
22: After this I looked, and, behold, the twelve feathers appeared no more, nor the two little feathers:
23: And there was no more upon the eagle's body, but three heads that rested, and six little wings.
24: Then saw I also that two little feathers divided themselves from the six, and remained under the head that was upon the right side: for the four continued in their place.
25: And I beheld, and, lo, these little wings thought to set up themselves and to have the rule.
26: And I beheld, and, lo, there was one set up, but shortly it appeared no more.
27: And the second was sooner away than the first.
28: And I beheld, and, lo, the two that remained thought also in themselves to reign:
29: And when they so thought, behold, there awaked one of the heads that were at rest, namely, it that was in the midst; for that was greater than the two other heads.
30: And then I saw that the two other heads were joined with it.
31: and behold, the head turned with those that were with it, and it devoured the two little wings which were planning to reign.
32: But this head put the whole earth in fear, and bare rule in it over all those that dwelt upon the earth with much oppression; and it had the governance of the world more than all the wings that had been.
33: And after this I beheld, and, lo, the head that was in the midst suddenly appeared no more, like as the wings.
34: But there remained the two heads, which also in like sort ruled upon the earth, and over those that dwelt therein.
35: And I beheld, and, lo, the head upon the right side devoured it that was upon the left side.
36: Then I head a voice, which said unto me, Look before you, and consider the thing that you see.
37: And I beheld, and lo, as it were a roaring lion chased out of the wood: and I saw that he sent out a man's voice unto the eagle, and said,
38: Hear you, I will talk with you, and Elyon shall say unto you,
39: Are not you it that remains of the four beasts, whom I made to reign in my world, that the end of their times might come through them?
40: You, the fourth that has come, have conquered all the beasts that have gone before; and you have held sway over the world with much terror, and over all the earth with grievous oppression; and for so long you have dwelt on the earth with deceit.
41: For the earth have you not judged with truth.
42: For you have afflicted the meek, you have hurt the peaceable, you have loved liars, and destroyed the dwellings of them that brought forth fruit, and have cast down the walls of such as did you no harm.
43: Therefore is thy wrongful dealing come up unto Elyon, and your pride unto the Mighty.
44: Elyon also has looked upon the proud times, and, behold, they are ended, and his abominations are fulfilled.
45: And therefore appear no more, you eagle, nor your horrible wings, nor your wicked feathers nor your malicious heads, nor your hurtful claws, nor all your vain body:
46: That all the earth may be refreshed, and may return, being delivered from thy violence, and that she may hope for the judgment and mercy of him that made her.
1: And it came to pass, whiles the lion spoke these words unto the eagle, I saw,
2: And, behold, the head that remained and the four wings appeared no more, and the two went unto it and set themselves up to reign, and their kingdom was small, and fill of uproar.
3: And I saw, and, behold, they appeared no more, and the whole body of the eagle was burnt so that the earth was in great fear: then awaked I out of the trouble and trance of my mind, and from great fear, and said unto my spirit,
4: Lo, this have you done unto me, in that you search out the ways of Elyon.
5: Lo, yet am I weary in my mind, and very weak in my spirit; and little strength is there in me, for the great fear wherewith I was afflicted this night.
6: Therefore will I now beseech Elyon, that he will comfort me unto the end.
7: And I said, YHWH that bears rule, if I have found grace before your sight, and if I am justified with you before many others, and if my prayer indeed be come up before your face;
8: Comfort me then, and show me your servant the interpretation and plain difference of this fearful vision, that you may perfectly comfort my soul.
9: For you have judged me worthy to show me the last times.
Now the interpretation is given:
10: And he said unto me, This is the interpretation of the vision:
11: The eagle, whom you saw come up from the sea, is the kingdom which was seen in the vision of your brother Daniel.
12: But it was not expounded unto him, therefore now I declare it unto you.
13: Behold, the days will come, that there shall rise up a kingdom upon earth, and it shall be feared above all the kingdoms that were before it.
14: In the same shall twelve kings reign, one after another:
15: Whereof the second shall begin to reign, and shall have more time than any of the twelve.
16: And this do the twelve wings signify, which you saw.
After the fall of the Western Roman Empire Charlemagne sought to restore the Roman Empire, he is regarded not only as the founding father of both French and German monarchies, but also as the father of Europe: his empire united most of Western Europe for the first time since the Romans.
In 799, the Romans tried to put out his eyes and tear out the tongue of Pope Leo III. He escaped, and fled to Charlemagne, asking him to intervene in Rome and restore him as Pope. Charlemagne agreed to travel to Rome, doing so in November 800. The pope crowned him Imperator Romanorum ("Emperor of the Romans") in Saint Peter's Basilica.
His empire was been divided amongst his grandsons, following the assassination of Berengar of Friuli in 924, the imperial title had lain vacant for nearly forty years. On 2 February 962, Otto the Great was crowned Emperor of what would become the Holy Roman Empire.
In the 1500’s the crown of the Holy Roman Empire passed to the House of Habsburg who were the Royal Family of Austria-Hungary.
Although the Empire was formally dissolved on 6 August 1806 when the last Holy Roman Emperor Francis II abdicated, following a military defeat by Napoleon the House of Habsburg survived, continuing to reign as Emperors of Austria and Kings of Hungary until the Habsburg empire's final dissolution in 1918 in the aftermath of World War I. They retained claim as Emperors of Rome, as William II used the title Kaiser (German for Caesar).
Now if we look at the various coat of arms banners of the Holy Roman Empire, we see how it fits with this vision. The banners features a one or two headed eagle with wings outstretched, and six “wing feathers” hanging down on each side, making twelve wing feathers:
Now lets look at the last twelve kings of the Holy Roman Empire:
Rulers Begin Reign Reign years
1 Francis 1637 21
2 Leopold I 1658 47
3 Joseph I 1705 6
4 Charles VI 1711 29
5 Charles VII 1742 3
6 Francis I 1745 20
7 Joseph II 1765 25
8 Leopold II 1790 2
9 Francis II 1792 14
10 *** ***William I 1871 17
11 *** ***Frederick III 1888 3 months
12 *** ***William II(Kaiser Wilhelm) 1888-1918 30
These are the twelve feather wings which are twelve kings which each reigned in turn. Note the second king ruled longer than the others. More than twice as long as any of the first nine, and while it was not more than twice as long as the 12th, remember the last three were not crowned by the Pope. This fulfilled the prophecy “Then I beheld, and, lo, in process of time the feathers that followed stood up upon the right side, that they might rule also; and some of them ruled, but within a while they appeared no more: For some of them were set up, but ruled not.” (2Esdras 11:20-21)
Ezra had it right the last three kings were set up, but the Pope did not crown them as Roman Empower, so they did not officially rule. Amazing how Ezra knew this 2,500 years before hand!
17: As for the voice which you heard speak, and that you saw not to go out from the heads but from the midst of the body thereof, this is the interpretation:
18: And in the midst of the time of that kingdom there shall arise great strivings, and it shall stand in peril of failing: nevertheless it shall not then fall, but shall be restored again to his beginning.
19: And whereas you saw the eight small wings sticking to her wings, this is the interpretation:
20: That in him there shall arise eight kings, whose times shall be but small, and their years swift.
When the peace treaty was signed in the wake of WWI eight new nations were added to the map:
Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Romania , Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and Albania.
21: And two of them shall perish, the middle time approaching: four shall be kept until their end begin to approach: but two shall be kept unto the end.
22: And whereas you saw three heads resting, this is the interpretation:
23: In his last days shall Elyon raise up three kings , and renew many things therein, and they shall have the dominion of the earth,
24: And of those that dwell therein, with much oppression, above all those that were before them: therefore are they called the heads of the eagle.
25: For these are they that shall accomplish his wickedness, and that shall finish his last end.
26: And whereas you saw that the great head appeared no more, it signifies that one of them shall die upon his bed, and yet with pain.
27: For the two that remain shall be slain with the sword.
28: For the sword of the one shall devour the other: but at the last shall he fall through the sword himself.
In the wake of WW I three major powers rose up from the “Barbarians of Europe” in the vacuum of the fall of the Holy Roman Empire: The United States (whose symbol is the eagle):
and Nazi Germany (whose coat of arms was also an eagle with six wing feathers hanging down on each side):
This is the coat of arms for Germany:
And the National Insignia for Nazi Germany
(notice the six wing feathers at the end of each wing)
Britain died “upon his bed” in that Britain passed from being a major power as if from old age. Britain slept while Nazi Germany grew in power.
The Unite States slew Nazi Germany “with the sword” (by war).
This leaves the United States as the last remaining head, which will be slain “with the sword” by Messiah upon his return.
29: And whereas you saw two feathers under the wings passing over to the head that is on the right side;
30: It signifies that these are they, whom Elyon has kept unto their end: this is the small kingdom and full of trouble, as you saw.
31: And the lion, whom you saw rising up out of the wood, and roaring, and speaking to the eagle, and rebuking her for her unrighteousness with all the words which you have heard;
32: This is the Messiah, which Elyon has kept for them and for their wickedness unto the end of days, who will arise from the seed of David, and will come and speak to them : he shall reprove them, and shall upbraid them with their cruelty.
33: For he shall set them before him alive in judgment, and shall rebuke them, and correct them.
34: For the rest of my people shall he deliver with mercy, those that have been pressed upon my borders, and he shall make them joyful until the coming of the day of judgment, whereof I have spoken unto you from the beginning.
35: This is the dream that you saw, and these are the interpretations.
36: And you alone were worthy to learn this secret of the Elyon.
37: Therefore write all these things that you have seen in a book, and hide them:
38: And teach them to the wise of the people, whose hearts you know may comprehend and keep these secrets.
This last heir to the Roman Empire (the USA) will not heed to the words of Messiah (Torah) and will be judged and YHWH’s people will be delivered out of her.
This is an amazing prophecy of what would take place with Daniel’s fourth beast (The Roman Empire) in the Last Days. How can one see detailed prophecy like this and not recognize the inspiration of 2nd Esdras?
