IS THANKSGIVING A PAGAN HOLIDAY?
By James Trimm

The Pilgrims were a splinter group from the fringes of the Puritan movement. Many of them were leaving a Britain which was too politically difficult for them, to start a “perfect” new world.

The first feast lasted three days when thay celebrated their first harvest in 1621,which, thanks to a little help from their native American friends, was abundant.

Thanksgiving as a “holiday” comes from a cross between a conventional harvest festival and the belief of the Pilgrim Fathers when, after serious hardship which had whittled their numbers down from 105 to 43, they finally realized their settlement was going to make it.

Thanksgiving was influenced in part by the English and continental European Harvest festivals popular in the Puritan movement, with churches decorated with cornucopias, pumpkins, corn, wheat sheaves, and other harvest bounty, English and European harvest hymns sung on Thanksgiving weekend and scriptural lections drawn from the biblical stories relating to the Jewish harvest festival of Sukkot.

President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day, to be celebrated on the final Thursday in November 1863. U.S. Presidents annually declared a Thanksgiving Day each year on the final Thursday of November. In 1938 F.D.R. broke with this tradition, moving Thanksgiving to the next-to-last Thursday in November.

On October 6, 1941 the U.S. Legislature passed a joint resolution setting this last-Thursday date for the holiday beginning in 1942. But, in December of that year the Senate passed an amendment requiring that Thanksgiving be observed each year on the fourth Thursday of November (This was sometimes the last Thursday and sometimes the next to last). On December 26, 1941 F.D.R. signed the bill into law, for the first time making the date of Thanksgiving a matter of federal law.

Thanksgiving is not of pagan origin, it originates from the Puritan pilgrims who were influenced by the biblical harvest festival of Sukkot.

The first documented thanksgiving feasts in territory currently belonging to the United States were conducted by Spaniards in the 16th century.[8][9][10] Thanksgiving services were routine in what was to become the Commonwealth of Virginia as early as 1607,[11] with the first permanent settlement of Jamestown, Virginia holding a thanksgiving in 1610.[8]

Spontaneous my foot.

Oh and yes we will win people over by love of the truth not compromise.

I too am thankful every day, even on the sun's-day but I do not go to worship service with the Jesus followers , because then I would be condoning it by my actions. So while I do not partake in pagan w(h)or(e)ship, it give me plenty of opportunity to witness as to why I do not partake in what worldly people do. Same as with Easter, Halloween, and Christmas.

And yes this nation needs to turn to YHWH without the least bit of compromise. But if giving thanks should never come under attack you best be explaining to YHWH how He was wrong to be against Yaw-roeb-awm by calling his so-called thanks sin!!!  Not to mention all the Hebrew people that worshiping idols in YHWH's name were sent prophets to tell them to quite. So I will not agree with rhetoric that the Scripture clearly speaks against. And I will not apologize for not being able to agree with y'all either. But I will be so kind as to herold REPENT. Over and out.

Personally I will forgo any generational curse handed down to me through the tribe of Ephraim. Yeah I had inherited lies, but I repented and will not go back. Y'all will never convince me to partake in such, so you might as well save your breath for them pagans that you share ThanksGiving with.

You might be interested to know that the old Worldwide Church of God back in the 20th Century, which was strongly against Pagan Holidays and probably did more than any institution in its time to publicize their pagan origins and popularize the view, through their distribution of millions of free booklets and magazines, opposed Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Valentines Day and even April Fools Day.... but SUPPORTED Thanksgiving Day.

In my minds eye, we all to often turn God's  truths and simple things of life, into stumbling blocks for ourselves and others, what makes something wrong or right, is  more about what Spirit you are doing something in. I do not see how any person or group, giving Thanks to God for their blessings,  can be anything but right.  If God and the Spirit are truly with you, what can you do wrong.

Here's how Yahusha taught us to deal with these things:

Mat 7:1-5: “Do not judge, lest you be judged.
For with what judgment you judge, you shall be judged. And with the same measure you use, it shall be measured to you. And why do you look at the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the plank in your own eye?  Or how is it that you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the splinter out of your eye,’ and see, a plank is in your own eye?
Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you shall see clearly to remove the splinter out of your brother’s eye."

Lew ,

you of all people should not call others hypocrites, enough said unless you really want to go there (this is what's called grace -take it if you like), other than you whole book of "Fossilized Customs" has people ranting about how they follow the spirit of the law not the letters thereof.

David,

again by what spirit leads ones to violate Torah? Can one have the spirit of anti-Torah and it be the same as YHWH's Spirit? I mean really did you think that one through? Or is it funny that when Yehoshuah taught on the Spirit of the Torah he taught a deeper observance as opposed to loosing the restrictions!!!

Dael,

howdy. I agree that there is division even among the Assembly of Yisra-Ail [Israel]. This would not be the first time that Division has reared its ugly head either. Yes division always starts by someone coming along teaching that YHWH does not really mean what He said and that it is OK to do other things, such as keeping sun's-day as the day of worship, and Easter sun's-day instead of Passover,  You know people (e.g.-Ignatius) that Shaul taught would come in amongst the flock and teach heresies. And as far as what is garbage let the Words of Eloheem speak to that matter.

{Yeshah-YaHu [Isaiah] 1:14}

Your new moons and your appointed feasts My Soul hateth: they are a trouble unto Me; I am weary to bear them.

Let me paraphrase  "Your thanksgiving feast YHWH abhors"!!!

So those that bring discord are the ones teaching the heresies, not the ones teaching truths of Torah. And no we do not have the same thing here with someone that condemns PURIN, CHANNAKAH, AND CHAG YESHUA. If you had read carefully my posts above you would see that those are in Scripture and I have no problems with such. It the ones in Scripture that YHWH has a problem with that I do not care for and teach against. And no I am not a self appointed prophet, but ain't that the way it goes, if one can not literally blind you against the truth with their hooplah  then they will turn and attack your character (Yehoshuah did say that there would be days like this). I am also told that if I see my brother sinning that I am to tell them. If they do not want to listen fine, their sin is not therefore on my hands. But if I keep speaking on the subject after having told them once consider it to be the Spirit of the Torah giving it that extra mile. Also if I do not speak up against such, some new comer seeing such hypocrisy might therefore fall away.  So my message is twofold, one to warn the transgressors, and two to warn others against following after false teachings in season and out of season.

But know this if you want to keep thanksgiving there was never anybody in your way.

To all,

I feel as if I have given sufficient warning here. If anyone feels the need continue to prop up this pagan form of thanksgiving at this point it falls upon deaf ears. If YHWH sees fit to give you another warning (Eloheem knows just how many you've had) let Him send another to you, if not either way you have been warned.

May,
YHWH bless thee and keep thee;
YHWH cause His face to shine on thee, and be gracious to thee;
YHWH lift up His face to thee, and give thee shalom.

Your Brother in Yehoshuah The Anointed One.

P.S. - I forgot - to Brother James, "CHURCH OF GOD" you say, really? I listened to your clear truth teachings about CHURCH and GOD and I wholeheartedly agree with what you say in them. I highly recommend others to go and listen to all of James's Clear Truth messages on the so-called church and the early heresies that began, such as LORD GOD worship, etc...

I had read that the pilgrims sought out an answer from scripture as how to give thanks to YHWH for their survival and a bountiful harvest and they found the Sukkot

and patterned the first thanksgiving after this one of YHWH feasts .it is interesting that this holiday is celebrated for two days and was originally celebrated in the first week of October as it still is in Canada .

Well to be more correct the Puitans kept a Sunday "Sabbath" (which is no Sabbath at all).  And while the majority of Native Americans do not keep Sukkot today, the Yuchi tribe still keep a similar feast to this very day.

Dael, Lew, and etc, thank-you very much; Words of light, not Words and thoughts stuck in the Letter of the Law. We cannot get stuck in the Letter of the Law, as early Hebrews and Jews did, it can lead eventual to separation from God, and being scattered instead of being gathered in. It leads to a thinking process, that denies that God is alive, and can give present Revelation and make changes to suite the people and circumstances at the time.

His chosen people should be the last ones to take upon them pride of self learning, we know, that we often tend to be stiff necked people. If we are in the right path with God, that can be a good thing, but if not it can slowly lead us away; Lucifer likes to lead with a flaxen cord, so softly, we do not even realize what is happening. One reason we need to pray to know the will and spirit of God throughout the day, each day. So rightly said, Judge not without the Spirit, without the Spirit you are like a ship at sea without a rudder.
