Lost Tribes Scholar John Hulley Has Passed Away

John Hulley Has Passed Away

A dear old friend of mine, John Hulley, has passed away. Hulley was found dead in his apartment on Friday morning (17th October 2014) where he had been living in Har Adar to the west of Jerusalem.  John was about 88 to 90 years old at the time of his death.

I first came to know John over twenty years ago, through a mutual friend, Dr. James Tabor.

John was born and raised in the USA where he spent most of his life.  Like my own father, he lied about his age to sign up and become a WWII veteran.  He trained with special forces to impersonate German soldiers behind enemy lines, but the war ended before he was actually sent on a mission.  In 1983 Ben David went to live in Israel, where he settled in Kiryat Arba. Hulley was published on subjects ranging from geophysics to trade, in journals such as Nature and World Politics.

In 1987 John Hulley published an article under his Hebrew name "Yochanan Ben David" in the Orthodox Jewish (Chabad) Journal B'Or HaTorah titled "Did any of the Lost Tribes Go North?" (B'Or Ha'Torah 6 (1987): 127-133).

Did any of the Lost Tribes Go North? By John Hulley

The object of John's ground breaking paper was to identify the Sabbatayon and thus determine the location of the Ten Lost Tribes. John's monumental article concluded that the Sabbatyon was in fact the Bosphorus straits between the Mediterranean Sea and the the Black Sea. Hulley showed that the Straites were anciently referred to as a river and that due to current fluctuations between the two Seas, the Bosphorus slows down, stops or changes direction approximately once every seven days. Hulley concluded that the legend might further be based upon a Sabbath day crossing of the Sabbatyon coinciding with the current being at rest. This would mean that the Ten Tribes had migrated across the straites toward Europe.

Hulley said the paper was an excerpt from a book on which he was working about the lost tribes.  I believe he was still working on this book at the time of his passing.

Hulley had been published on subjects ranging from geophysics to trade, in journals such as Nature and World Politics.

He will be missed.
