Moroni and The MIA/ARI's House of Aaron

Moroni and the MIA/ARI's House of Aaron
By
James Scott Trimm

Under the section “Who We Are” at the Alliance of Redeemed Israel (also known as the Messianic Israel Alliance) website reads:

Our Shepherds are husband and wife teams who address the needs of member congregations as well as doctrinal issues that impact the Alliance, and they offer overall suggested guidance for the MIA....

Dr. John and Joie Conrad
John and Joie live in a Believers’ community in Western Utah. John is the leader of the House of Aaron…  Their [sic] seek to awaken Believers in this day to their Israelite heritage and to the Elijah message of turning the hearts of the fathers to the children and the hearts of the children to the fathers.

House of Aaron leader John Conrad will be a featured speaker at the upcoming MIA/ARI conference.

But what does the MIA/ARI mean “awaken Believers in this day to their Israelite heritage and to the Elijah message”?

Notice that the MIA/ARI website refers to the words of Malachi:

5  Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:
6  And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.
(Malachi 5:5-6 KJV)

The House of Aaron Website says (under “What we Believe”):

We believe in the literal restoration of lineal Israel in these last days as spoken in the Bible. This restoration, which has already begun, includes the reestablishment of the House of Levi and Aaron through God's messenger Elias (Elijah).

The House of Aaron website also says (under “Overview”):

The House of Aaron today has been restored and reactivated beginning with a special calling of Maurice Glendenning, a first-born son of Aaron.

The problem is that the House of Aaron’s claim that Glendenning received a special calling to restore and reactivate the House of Levi and Aaron through God’s messenger Elijah is based not so much on our text of Malachi 5:5-6 but in a rewording of that text supposedly given to Joseph Smith Jr. by Moroni in his “second vision”.

In Joseph Smith’s account of how he is supposed to have received the Book of Mormon, he describes the following vision in which he was visited by the angel of the resurrected personage of Moroni.  The official LDS version of Smith’s account goes as follows:

33 He called me by name, and said unto me that he was a messenger sent from the presence of God to me, and that his name was Moroni; that God had a work for me to do; and that my name should be had for good and evil among all nations, kindreds, and tongues, or that it should be both good and evil spoken of among all people.
34 He said there was a book deposited, written upon gold plates, giving an account of the former inhabitants of this continent, and the source from whence they sprang. He also said that the fulness of the everlasting Gospel was contained in it, as delivered by the Savior to the ancient inhabitants;
35 Also, that there were two stones in silver bows—and these stones, fastened to a breastplate, constituted what is called the Urim and Thummim—deposited with the plates; and the possession and use of these stones were what constituted “seers” in ancient or former times; and that God had prepared them for the purpose of translating the book.
36 After telling me these things, he commenced quoting the prophecies of the Old Testament. He first quoted part of the third chapter of Malachi; and he quoted also the fourth or last chapter of the same prophecy, though with a little variation from the way it reads in our Bibles. Instead of quoting the first verse as it reads in our books, he quoted it thus:
37 For behold, the day cometh that shall burn as an oven, and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly shall burn as stubble; for they that come shall burn them, saith the Lord of Hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.
38 And again, he quoted the fifth verse thus: Behold, I will reveal unto you the Priesthood, by the hand of Elijah the prophet, before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.
(Joseph Smith- History 1:33-38; Pearl of Great Price)

Joseph Smith's Alleged Vision of Moroni

This rewording of Malachi 4:5-6 became so important to Mormonism that it also became Doctrine and Covenants section 2:

1 Behold, I will reveal unto you the Priesthood, by the hand of Elijah the prophet, before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.
2 And he shall plant in the hearts of the children the promises made to the fathers, and the hearts of the children shall turn to their fathers.
3 If it were not so, the whole earth would be utterly wasted at his coming.
(D&C 2)

Note how this differs from the actual reading of Malachi 4:5-6 which reads in the KJV as follows:

5  Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:
6  And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.
(Malachi 4:5-6 KJV)

The account allegedly given by Moroni changes “I will send you Elijah the prophet” to “I will reveal unto you the Priesthood, by the hand of Elijah the prophet”.

Statue of Moroni

Gledenning claimed to receive revelations from Elias (Elijah) and to be the messenger of the covenant from Malachi 3-4 saying:

"...that those of the House of Ephraim may know that I am the one spoken of by the prophets who should come to restore all things appointed unto me, I do now declare unto you that I am Elias who should come in the last days to restore unto Ephraim the House of Levi"
(Levitical Writings 166:1)

And if there is any doubt that Glendenning’s claims are based on fictional Moroni’s words rather than the true word’s of Malachi, we need look no further than the very revelations Glendenning claimed to receive from Elijah:

Now if you comfort not yourselves in that which has been written unto you by Moroni, verily you shall not be comforted in that which you shall find in man.
(L.W. 193:9; Book of Elias 188:9)

5 Now I say unto you, there was not a son of Jacob in beginning who was without the house of Levi; and as it was in the beginning, so also shall it be in the days of the restoration that all things, whatsoever they were that were of God, may be restored.
6 And now I declare unto you to be comforted by Moroni, for verily did he write of this day; for behold, he abided in him, that we may be one with our Lord Jesus.
7 Now in the days of Moroni, while he tarried in the flesh to be quickened, he did write of this day that your hearts may be comforted.
8 His words do I now declare unto you that you shall rest from confusion and that you may put your trust in them that you may not be deceived. And if you be not deceived, there shall be no grace which shall not be yours.
(L.W. 212:5-8; Book of Elias 207:5-8)

And this is again a reference to the Revelations of Joseph Smith Jr. regarding the return of Eliah to restore the keys of the priesthood and “restoration of all things” in connection with the words of Moroni, and not to the prophecy in Malachi:

27:5 Behold, this is wisdom in me; wherefore, marvel not, for the hour cometh that I will drink of the fruit of the vine with you on the earth, and with Moroni, whom I have sent unto you to reveal the Book of Mormon, containing the fulness of my everlasting gospel, to whom I have committed the keys of the record of the stick of Ephraim;
27:6 And also with Elias, to whom I have committed the keys of bringing to pass the restoration of all things spoken by the mouth of all the holy prophets since the world began, concerning the last days;
27:7 And also John the son of Zacharias, which Zacharias he (Elias) visited and gave promise that he should have a son, and his name should be John, and he should be filled with the spirit of Elias;
27:8 Which John I have sent unto you, my servants, Joseph Smith, Jun., and Oliver Cowdery, to ordain you unto the first priesthood which you have received, that you might be called and ordained even as Aaron;
27:9 And also Elijah, unto whom I have committed the keys of the power of turning the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to the fathers, that the whole earth may not be smitten with a curse;
(D&C 27:5-9)

Moroni is Supposed to Have Hidden the Gold Plates of the Book of Mormon

The House of Aaron’s claim that Glendenning received a special calling to restore and reactivate the House of Levi and Aaron through God’s messenger Elijah are based on the rewording of that text supposedly given to Joseph Smith Jr. by Moroni in his “second vision”.

The MIA/ARI’s claim that the House of Aaron is working to “awaken Believers in this day to their Israelite heritage and to the Elijah message” is false and ultimately rooted in the revelations of Joseph Smith and the fictional angel of Moroni.

I hope you over look my confusions, still trying to understand this part of my heritage.

Very interesting, looks like another branch off from the  main Mormon Church. I had come across some talk online about some group claiming to be here to restore the House of Aaron, which did not make any sense in the least. When I was reading about some group, who as claiming that Christ linage back to the House of David was a bit murky after Kind David, back to our Father Jacob, and the beginning of the 12 Tribes of Israel. Seems that they were claiming that Mary was descended from the Tribe of Levi, and one of her parents was a Levite, not from Aaron, but descended from Moses or etc, it was a bit confusing, but interesting to read, still confuse, Can you clear some of this up, Seems many groups find Christs linage murky as I said and there are a couple accepted linages my most Christian and Jewish groups. One site made more sense, in that they said, Mary was of both the Tribe of Judah and Levi, which would give Christ full earthly authority to all groups, as thee Patriarch Priest King.

The need for our steering Away from clearly pointless debates with these who would divert our faith in the Shema,and of the inerrancy of Tanak is made by their very behaviors. Please study TEXT! Al of us must do so.
