In 1526 William Tyndale published the New Testament in English for the first time (translated from the Greek Textus Receptus). He had to have the books printed outside of England and then smuggled them in. He then began work translating the Old Testament as well, publishing much of it as well. I n 1536 he was strangled and then burned at the stake for “heresy”, but he made a profound step toward putting the Scriptures into the hands of the common man in the English speaking world. This version later became a primary basis for the KJV.
In 1890 James Strong took another major step to putting the texts of the Scriptures in the hands of the English speaking world when he published his life’s work, the Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance. This volume allowed any layman to look up any English word appearing in any passage of the KJV in the front of the book, and find a Hebrew or Greek word number, which could them be used to look up the word by its number in Hebrew and Greek lexicons in the back of the book. This tool allowed any English speaker to to word studies on the Hebrew/Aramaic of the Tanak (“Old Testament”) and the Greek “New Testament” with no special training in Hebrew or Greek.
In the decades that have passed since James Strong published his monumental Concordance in 1890, Strong’s word numbers have become an important tool for laymen doing their own Bible Studies. Today many other resources are keyed to these Strong’s word numbers. There are editions of major lexicons now published keyed to these word numbers, including the well known Gesenius Hebrew-Chaldee Lexicon to the Old Testament. The two volume Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament has a table in the back, converting Strong’s numbers to its TWBOT numbers. And the Interlinear Bible by Jay P. Green, Sr. is also keyed to these Strong’s numbers.
Today Project Davar is attempting to put the Hebrew and Aramaic texts of the books of the “New Testament” as well as other important books (like the Apocrypha, the Book of Jasher and the Book of Enoch) online in interlinear Hebrew/Aramaic and English keyed to these same Strong’s word numbers thus making these texts available to the common man to use with many research tools already available.
This project will, for the first time ever, truly put these texts in the hands of the common English speaking lay-students in the same way that the Hebrew Tanak and Greek “New Testament” are now.
We need your help. It is not the activity of James Scott Trimm (in my quest to publish these texts to the world with all of the vigor and enthusiasm that I can muster) who is responsible to bring these texts to the English speaking world but it is all of us together (as “Sons of Light”) who are charged with this responsibility. I look at this project as a cooperative effort with each one of you. Your financial help and your ardent prayers for this project are greatly appreciated.
William Tyndale gave his very life to make the text of the Scriptures available to the English speaking public. Could you give 50 or 100 dollars to help put these Hebrew and Aramaic texts in the hands of the common man right on the internet for everyone to see?
Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is comparable to a man that is a merchant, seeking
good pearls: Who, when he had found one precious pearl, went and sold all that he had and bought it.
Is the Word not such a “pearl of great price”? Is this project not a literal example if “laboring in the Word” whose laborers are “worthy of their wage?” If I were independently wealthy I would do this project for no wage, but I am not, and I must support my family. So I ask you, is this not a labor in the Word whose laborer is worthy of his wage?
We must raise $400
by the end of the day today!
The last two months have been a very tough month for this ministry. And this month has been even worse!
