"Tithing one's earnings is simply a custom and is *not obligatory* under the Mosaic or rabbinical law"

Posted on September 2, 2009 at 4:00am 29 Comments

The ***Jewish Encyclopedia*** under the topic of TITHING cotains the following insight:

The tithe for the poor gave rise to the tithingof one's earnings, with the object of distributing among the needy the sum so appropriated. This is inferred in Sifre (quoted in Tos. to Ta'an. 9a) from Deut. xiv. 22, and is therefore considered as an obligation imposed by the Mosaic law ("Ṭure Zahab" to Shulḥan 'Aruk, Yoreh De'ah, 249, 1; comp. Jews Do Not Tithe Today

Thankfully, Jewish theologians know better than their Christian counterparts. They are well aware that only Levites have the right to receive tithe of the people. After all, the Jewish leaders have the Old Testament as their Scripture and that’s what it commands. And since there is no Temple in existence (and consequently no ordained Levites or Priests serving in a Temple), then a major factor in fulfilling the laws of tithing does not exist in our… Continue

How Many Tithes were there?

Torah teaches that the tithe was paid in 6 of 7 years on crops, but NO TITHE WAS PAID in the 7th year. Funny how most Christian pastors do not instruct their flock to take a break from tithing every 7th year.

In every 7 year cycle, there was a tithe paid in the 3rd and 6th year (some say only the 3rd year) that was different from what was paid in the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th years of every 7 year cycle. The only time I've heard a Christian pastor talk about this was when they more or… Continue

Tithing: Christian vs Jewish Views!

There's a conflict between how modern day Christians and Judaism teach tithing. Some Christians teach tithing is "Old Testament" and no longer mandated. Others teach it is still required, but those that do teach it much different than Judaism. Among the differences:

Judaism teaches it only applies to the strict description of Torah; which is kosher livestock (not unkosher animals like pigs) and crops grown in Israel (but not crops… Continue

Pt. 3 - Farmed Fish May Pose Risk For Mad Cow Disease

Farmed Fish May Pose Risk For Mad Cow Disease

LOUISVILLE, Ky. University of Louisville neurologist Robert P. Friedland, M.D., questions the safety of eating farmed fish in today's Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, adding a new worry to concerns about the nation's food supply.

Friedland and his co-authors suggest farmed fish could transmit Creutzfeldt Jakob disease--commonly known as mad cow disease--if they are fed byproducts rendered from cows. The scientists urge… Continue
