What is Nazarene Judaism?
James Scott Trimm
The first believers in Yeshua were a Jewish sect known as “Nazarenes” or in Hebrew “Netzarim” (Acts 24:5). The “church father” Jerome (4th Cent.) described these Nazarenes as those “…who accept Messiah in such a way that they do not cease to observe the old Law.” (Jerome; On. Is. 8:14).
Elsewhere he writes:
Today there still exists among the Jews in all the synagogues of the East a heresy which is called that of the Minæans (1), and which is still condemned by the Pharisees; [its followers] are ordinarily called ‘Nazarenes’; they believe that Messiah, the son of God, was born of the Virgin Miriam, and they hold him to be the one who suffered under Pontius Pilate and ascended to heaven, and in whom we also believe.”
(Jerome; Letter 75 Jerome to Augustine)
The fourth century “church father” Epiphanius gives a more detailed description:
But these sectarians… did not call themselves Christians–but “Nazarenes,” … However they are simply complete Jews. They use not only the New Testament but the Old Testament as well, as the Jews do… They have no different ideas, but confess everything exactly as the Law proclaims it and in the Jewish fashion– except for their belief in Messiah, if you please! For they acknowledge both the resurrection of the dead and the divine creation of all things, and declare that G-d is one, and that his son is Yeshua the Messiah. They are trained to a nicety in Hebrew. For among them the entire Law, the Prophets, and the… Writings… are read in Hebrew, as they surely are by the Jews. They are different from the Jews, and different from Christians, only in the following. They disagree with Jews because they have come to faith in Messiah; but since they are still fettered by the Law–circumcision, the Sabbath, and the rest– they are not in accord with Christians…. they are nothing but Jews…. They have the Goodnews according to Matthew in its entirety in Hebrew. For it is clear that they still preserve this, in the Hebrew alphabet, as it was originally written. (Epiphanius; Panarion 29)
(1) “Minæans” apparently Latinized from Hebrew MINIM (singular is MIN) a word which in modern Hebrew means “apostates” but was originally an acronym for a Hebrew phrase meaning “Believers in Yeshua the Nazarene”.
Nazarene Judaism maintains a belief in Yeshua as the Messiah. We have not the Jewish faith, identity, heritage and culture to “convert” to a new or foreign religion. To some the concept of Jews believing in Yeshua and practicing Judaism is a contradiction in terms. The common wisdom is that on the one side you have Jews and Judaism, and on the other you have Gentiles and Christianity. However in the first century there were literally hundreds of thousands of Jewish followers of Yeshua (Acts 2:41, 47; 4:4; 6:7; 9:31; 21:20) they were zealous for the Torah (Acts 15:19-21; 21:17-27) and met in synagogues (James 1:1, 2:2). The big question then was, had Yeshua come for the Gentiles as well (Acts 10; Acts 15). The greatest paradox in history eventually occured, for today people question how one can follow Yeshua and remain Jewish.
Today we are seeking to put Yeshua back into the context of Second Temple Era Judaism. Nazarene Judaism is a spiritual renaissance, a revival, a return to the pure faith of the original Jewish followers of Yeshua. It is a return to the Tanak and to the root of the olive tree (Rom. 11).
As the prophet Jeremiah tells us:
Thus says YHWH, “Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, Where the good way is, and walk in it: And you shall find rest for your souls….”
As Nazarenes we are applying Jewish hermeneutics to the original Hebrew and Aramaic manuscripts of the Ketuvim Netzarim (writings of the Nazarenese, commonly known as the "New Testament") in continuity with Second Temple Era Judaism.
An amazing time is at hand! Biblical prophecy is being fulfilled all around us on a daily basis. A major prophetic event that the Scriptures state will occur before the return of Messiah, is just about ready to occur, in fact it is happening right now!
… but in the land of their captivities they shall remember themselves.
And shall know that I am YHWH their Elohim: for I will give them a
heart, and ears to hear: And they shall praise me in the land of their
captivity, and think upon my name, And return from their stiff neck,
and from their wicked deeds: for they shall remember the way of their
fathers, which sinned before YHWH. And I will bring them again into
the land which I promised with an oath unto their fathers, Avraham,
Yitzchak, and Ya'akov, and they shall be masters of it: and I will
increase them, and they shall not be diminished. And I will make an
everlasting covenant with them to be their Elohim, and they shall be
my people: and I will no more drive my people of Israel out of the
land that I have given them.
(Barukh (Baruch) 2:30-35)
This restoration is upon us. Even as the Churches continue to proclaim a "Jesus" that frees them from the "bondage" of the Law.
I am honored to be able to be partnered with truth seekers as this restoration of Nazarene Judaism moves forward in fulfillment of prophecy.
I realize that it is you who make our work at the WNAE (Worldwide Nazarene Assembly of Elohim) possible. These are in fact the prophetic last days, and we do have a role in preparing the way of YHWH and declaring his Word to the world in the last days.
I am so thankful for all of you who support the WNAE, that you are inspired to see that the true wisdom, knowledge and understanding of the Scriptures is restored. I am so blessed that you and I can be a part of the very people whom Elohim has chosen to accomplish His restoration.
My job is to provide the Community with essential teaching, linguistic, cultural and historical knowledge, which through the enlightenment of the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) brings out the true teaching of the Scriptures. I believe I have been doing that job well for the past nineteen years. Much has been accomplished, however much more is yet to be done. The world is a big place, and we need to exert ourselves to reaching the lost souls in it with the message of Torah and Messiah.
We ended November under budget, we have bills to pay and no funds with which to pay them. Now is the time to step up to the plate and support this work.
I truly want to thank each of you for the support that you give to us in order to present the truth of Torah and the Good News of Messiah to this lost world.
This ministry is bringing the message of Torah and Messiah to the lost world, bringing milk to new believers and nice juicy steaks for mature believers.
This ministry stands up for Messiah and for Torah. We have distribute hundreds of copies of free books and have a profound and successful outreach to the Jewish community. We were pioneers in restoring the original Hebrew and Aramaic text of the books known as the "New Testament" and just a few days ago we restored the lost original Hebrew text of 1st Maccabees to the Community. Thousands of people visit our website every month, and hundreds of free copies of Mashiach: Messiah from a True Jewish Perspective have been distributed. And we have only just begun!
Help us keep the vision alive!
Do not count on someone else to do your part, you do your part.
What other ministry is reaching the Jewish people with Messiah like this ministry is?
Now is time to step up to the plate!
